Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Reclothe us in our rightful mind”

In 1872, John G. Whittier (in his song, “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”) thought that Christians singing in worship needed to petition God to “reclothe us in our rightful mind.”  Well, that was then, this is now.  Things are much different now.  Right?  Now that we’re in the 21st century, Christians no longer struggle with menial things like keeping a rightful mind.  Do they?

We all know that if Christians, 137 years ago, needed to beg God on Sundays to “reclothe us in our rightful mind,” that Christians in the 21st century need to sing that verse of that song at least three times a day every day.  There are so many things…let’s call them “distractions”…seeking to strip our minds of that which is right, we need to be reminded of God’s wardrobe for our minds.  “Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 13:14).  “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Col. 3:12; cf. 1 Pet. 5:5).  “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:5).  Lord, we beg, reclothe us!
