Let's Go Back to the Bible

What a great and terrible fall!

Of all of those Bible characters who fell from peaks of greatness to depths of shame, Solomon may not get enough notice.  The depths to which he fell, when “his wives turned his heart after other gods” (1 Kings 11:4-8), caused a major division in the kingdom of Israel.  But, the heights from which he fell were almost unparalleled (not talking about wealth but about faith).

God basically gave Solomon a blank check, “Ask!  What shall I give you?” (1 Kings 3:5).  At first, Solomon recited all the Lord had already given him – “You have shown great mercy…You have continued this great kindness…You have given him a son…” (3:6).  He humbled himself, saying, “I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in” (3:7), before requesting wisdom.

To achieve and maintain great faith, let us learn a lesson.  First, let us consider all that God has already given to us.  Then, let us humble ourselves before God, recognizing our child-like dependence upon Him.  Finally, instead of lavishness, let us request His will be done!
