Let's Go Back to the Bible

Oh, what painful verbs!

In Luke 22:54, Jesus was arrested, led and brought into the high priest’s house. Meditating on those verbs, and their implications, ought to make us cringe. But, those are not the only verbs in this passage. Consider the verbs that describe Peter’s actions (and a few adverbs).

“Peter followed” and did so “at a distance” (v. 54). Got the picture? “Peter sat” and did so “among” the enemies of Jesus (v. 55). Got the picture? Peter denied” being with Jesus (v. 57). Got the picture? “Peter said” he was not one of Jesus’ followers (v.  58). Got the picture? “Peter said” again he was not with Jesus (v. 60). Got the picture? “Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed” (v. 60, another verb). Jesus did two things–“the Lord turned and looked at Peter” (v. 61). Got the picture? Back to Peter’s verbs: “Peter remembered the word of the Lord” (v. 61). Wouldn’t you? Got the picture? Two more verbs and one adverb: “Peter went out and wept” and he did so “bitterly” (v. 62).

Read through those verbs in bold again. Oh, what painful thoughts! “Lord, please! Please, I’m begging You! Please help me, dear God, to never, ever, ever deny You!”
