Let's Go Back to the Bible

How powerful is a word?

The power of a word is most impressively illustrated in Genesis 1.  Peter sums it up by saying, “By the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water…” (2 Peter 3:5).  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” by His word.  Peter continues in verse 7 by affirming, “The heavens and the earth…are now preserved by the same word…”  His word created all things and sustains all things (see also Hebrews 1:3).

Words have power!  The wise man said, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Prov. 18:21).  With our words is the power of “blessing and cursing” (James 3:10), of speaking the truth or speaking a lie (Eph. 4:25), of building up or tearing down (Eph. 4:29), of justifying us before God or condemning us before God (Matt. 12:36-37).

The words of our tongues are so powerful that they can lead one to Christ or drive one away from Christ.  How are you using your words?
