Let's Go Back to the Bible

Hey, Junior High — got change?

As I was watching our Junior High young people on Sunday, I was impressed with several things, but these two in particular.  First, I was struck by their good behavior and participation in worship.  For a group of eleven-, twelve- and thirteen-year-olds to sit by themselves in a group and take part in worshiping God is very encouraging.  The second thing that came to mind was the degree of change that is yet to be experienced in their young lives.

Hey, Junior High kids, you may have a full head of hair now, but that’s going to change.  You may have limitless energy to run and play, but that’s going to change.  You may be one of the smallest or weakest members of your family, but that’s going to change.  You may have nice, smooth skin, but that’s going to change.  You might have to obey your parents and do all they tell you to do now, but that’s going to change.  You may have to ride with others in order to go anywhere, but that’s going to change.  You may not have much of your own money right now, but that’s going to change.  You may not have any bills or own any property, but that’s going to change.  Over time, there are going to be lots of things that change in your life.

Some of these changes you may like.  Some of these changes you probably will not like.  Other than your DNA and your fingerprints, there’s not much about your life that will not change over the next several decades.  Let me tell you about one sure and unchanging (because it’s unchangeable) part of your life.  This is pretty cool!

God does “not change,” for with Him “there is no variation or shadow of turning” (Mal. 3:6; Jas. 1:17).  God does not get old!  He is not an old man (as some might imagine)!  God does not get stronger or weaker!  God does not get tired, sleepy or sluggish without energy!  God does not need an energy boost!  God does not grow richer or poorer and is not subject to losing it all!  He changes not!

So why does that matter to you?  God loves you, and that doesn’t change!  God wants to bless you abundantly, and that doesn’t change!  God wants you to go to heaven, and that doesn’t change!  God is always there for you, and that doesn’t change!  God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think, and that doesn’t change!  God has given you the surefire way to please Him, obey Him and spend eternity with Him, and that doesn’t change!

Many things are going to change, but not God!
