Let's Go Back to the Bible

Who do they think they are?

In comparing himself to Jesus, John the Baptizer said, “whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose” (Mark 1:7). When the master fisherman, Peter, witnessed Jesus’ miraculous catch of fish, he (in his astonishment) exclaimed, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” (Luke 5:8). Even the Roman centurion realized, “I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof…I did not even think myself worthy to come to You” (Luke 7:6-7).

Those with open and humble hearts recognized (1) who Jesus was/is and (2) who they were in comparison. Those with closed and stubborn hearts rejected Him and crucified Him.

It is so easy today for some of us to say, “Of course, I believe in Jesus.” But how do we see ourselves in comparison to Him? Do we recognize how unworthy we are of His attention, let alone His love and sacrifice for us? Our lives and our words need to honor Him in every way, and may we never scorn His precious name in our words or actions!
