Let's Go Back to the Bible

What every man needs to hear

The man after God’s own heart was getting ready to die. The words in the first nine verses of 1 Kings 2 were his very last, and they were directed at his son, Solomon. If you were deeply in tune with the heart of God and had one last message to give your son, what would you say? Men, pay attention! David started off by saying, “Be strong and prove yourself a man” (2:2).

How does one “prove himself a man”? How does one “show himself a man” (NASB) or “act like a man” (NIV)? I suppose we could let the culture dictate that, which would keep the man relevant to the age in which he lives. I suppose we could all offer our opinions about what it means to be a “man.” OR, we could just let the man after God’s own heart explain it.

Keep reading. Here is what a MAN in God’s eyes is and does – “And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written…” (2:3). A MAN walks with God and does what He says! Are you a MAN?
