Let's Go Back to the Bible

The “Ugly Duckling” in the church

Do you remember the story of “The Ugly Duckling”? I have a few questions about that story. Was the “Ugly Duckling” actually ugly? Who decided the “Ugly Duckling” was ugly? Because the “Ugly Duckling” didn’t look like, sound like or act like the “other ducks” around him, did that give the “other ducks” the right to behave in the way they did, by ostracizing and scorning him? Do you remember it turned out that the “ugly duckling” was actually the “beautiful one”?

I wonder if this sort of thing could ever happen in the church. I wonder if there has ever been a Christian “Ugly Duckling” — a Christian Duckling that some “other ducks” decided was “ugly,” and so they ostracized and scorned him because he didn’t look like, sound like or act like them. Could that ever happen in the church, among Christians who are all “ugly ducklings” in their own right? Should we not remember that God’s “ducklings” are actually the beautiful ones?

Our Lord (who has all authority) and our Savior (who died for us “ugly ducklings”) instructed, “Treat people the same way you want them to treat you” (Matt. 7:12, NASB).
