What a faithless and evil generation Jesus faced when He came to this earth! Nothing was good enough for them! Their greatest desire was to find some flaw in Jesus! We read of many occasions when they came seeking a sign from Jesus (as if He had not already given them an abundance of signs). “Some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, ‘Teacher, we want to see a sign from You’” (Matt. 12:38). “Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven” (Matt. 16:4). “So the Jews answered and said to Him, ‘What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?’” (John 2:18).
On each of these three occasions, Jesus gave them the same answer. “No sign will be given to [this evil and adulterous generation] except the sign of the prophet Jonah…three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matt. 12:39-40; 16:4). “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). The greatest sign of all time was the resurrection of Jesus!
Essential: “Believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead” (Rom. 10:9).
