Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Did you hear about brother or sister so-and-so?”

“I just heard something juicy (and of a private nature) about someone, and I don’t even know if it is true or not. What should I do?” “I just heard something juicy (and of a private nature) about someone, and it just has to be true. What should I do?” “I just heard something juicy (and of a private nature) about someone, and I know without question that it is true. What should I do?”

Do you know that the answer to these questions is absolutely the same? Before you do anything, you need to ask yourself, “Is this any of my business? Does this really matter? Is any action really necessary, and if so, do I need to be the one doing anything?” If it is deemed that something must be done, the first action is the same for every scenario–“Go and tell him his fault between you and him alone” (Matt. 18:15). If you are not willing to do that, then you have no right to take any other action! There is no place for gossips or busybodies in the Lord’s family (1 Tim. 5:13; Tit. 3:2; 1 Pet. 4:15). But there is plenty of room for imperfect people practicing the Golden Rule and being eager to forgive others of their wrongs (Eph. 4:32).
