Let's Go Back to the Bible

Keeping up with the…

The old comic of a century ago started a saying that has continued even until today—“Keeping up with the Joneses.”  In the comic strip, “the Joneses” were not based on any one particular family, but it was a generic expression to capture any neighbor’s social or economic status.  If someone else was getting ahead in life and prospering, the average person tried to “keep up.”

In your life, it may not be “the Joneses,” but who is it?  Who is it that you are trying to “keep up with”?  Is it someone in your family that’s egging you on?  Is it a coworker that always seems to have the latest and greatest?  Is it someone at church, that you don’t understand how they have more than you, but you figure if they can have it that you should have it, too?

There are probably all sorts of ways for each person to complete the saying, “Keeping up with the _______.”  How do you finish it?  Who is your target?  Who are you trying to imitate?  Jesus repeatedly instructed His disciples, “Follow Me!”  Are you keeping up with the Lord?
