Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Isn’t there a more humane way to discipline your child?”

Well, the radio DJs thought they had it all figured out.  Some of them praised the school system in a small Texas town that was bringing the paddle back for disciplinary purposes, but others were wholly against the idea of spanking, asking (or suggesting), “Isn’t there a more humane way to discipline your children and reason with them?”  One caller used the word “uncivilized.”

Is the God of the Bible inhumane, uncivilized, unreasonable?  The wise man Solomon gave inspired parenting instructions:  “He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly…Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him…Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you strike him with a rod, he will not die…The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother…Correct your son, and he will give you rest…Chasten your son while there is hope, and do not set your heart on his destruction” (Prov. 13:24; 22:15; 23:13; 29:15, 17; 19:18).  Give prayerful consideration to the words of God, instead of the words of today’s “know-it-alls.”
