Let's Go Back to the Bible

“I’m only human!”

The 1980s gave us some pop songs that helped to shape the way of thinking for an entire generation.  To justify infidelity in marriage, the “Human League” hit the charts in 1986 with, “I’m only human, of flesh and blood I’m made.  Human, born to make mistakes.”  Of course, they were only following “The King of Pop,” Michael Jackson, who released his single, “Human Nature,” in 1983.  To answer the question why people do certain things and act certain ways, Jackson sang, “If they say, why, why?  Tell ‘em that is human nature…I like livin’ this way.”

So, pretty much, “being human” has become the conveniently offered excuse for deviant behaviors.  “Well, what do you expect?  I’m only human!” Translation:  “This is normal and natural and should not be considered anything other than typical of most people today.”

Following the “human nature” excuse will doom us for all eternity.  That’s why God has given us the opportunity to become “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Pet. 1:4).  Pretty cool!
