The Bible gives great emphasis to widows and to the special place they have in the heart of God. In the Old Testament, there were laws instructing to “not afflict any widow” (Ex. 22:22; cf. Zech. 7:10) 
and to make special provisions to see that they were not neglected (Deut. 14:29; 24:20-21; 26:13). In the New Testament, one of the first crises that the church faced was when widows were being “neglected” (Acts 6:1-7). Thus, instructions were given for the congregation to take special care of those who are “widows indeed” (1 Tim. 5:3-16), but to not limit care and attention to only those. “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world” (Jas. 1:27).
God gave all of these instructions to His people regarding widows because He truly has a heart for them. The Lord is “a defender of widows” (Psa. 68:5), “relieves the…widow” (Psa. 146:9) and “administers justice for…the widow” (Deut. 10:18). So, the question is, “Do you?” There are widows all around us in the church. Do you help and honor them in deed?
