Let's Go Back to the Bible

Guard against ungodly influences

Take a moment and reflectively read the following character traits from Second Timothy 3. As you read them, answer the question, “Do you know any persons who have qualities like these?”

People who are “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power” (2 Tim. 3:2-5).

Each of us have our “weak moments,” when one of those words could be used to describe us, but the list is not “weak moments” but heart conditions and life traits. Do you know any persons whose very character could be described with one of these terms? The instructions to Timothy are clear: “And from such people turn away!” (3:5). We are influenced by the people with whom we associate (Prov. 27:17; 1 Cor. 15:33). May God help us to avoid ungodly influences!
