Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Good and acceptable in the sight of the Lord”

There are a number of times when Scripture talks about something being “acceptable to the Lord.” Doesn’t that expression sound so appealing? Doing something that is “acceptable” in the eyes of the Lord. What a motivation! One such time is in First Timothy chapter two.

Verse three begins with the word “For,” which points back as an explanation to (i.e., a reason for doing) the first two verses. The text reads, “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved…” (1 Tim. 2:3-4). So, the wording demands this question: “WHAT is good and acceptable in the sight of the God”?

The answer: “…That supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority” (2:1-2). Do you pray for those in authority? Do you intercede to God on behalf of those in authority? Do you give thanks for those in authority? Only by doing ALL (see the word “and”) of these can we be “good and acceptable in the sight of God.”
