Let's Go Back to the Bible

God’s mercy and God’s truth are inseparable!

There are some religious folks who are so enamored by the wonderful mercy of God and, simultaneously, so offended by others who place such strong emphasis on the absolute (and limited) truth of God, that these folks will lift up God’s mercy to the near exclusion of God’s truth. To the opposite extreme, you can find religious folks who are so fixed on God’s truth that they totally lose sight of God’s mercy. In Scripture, we learn that the two are indivisible!

Mercy and truth have met together” (Psa. 85:10). “All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth” (Psa. 25:10;  cf. 89:14). In fact, the two concepts are practically used interchangeably: “Your mercy reaches unto the heavens, and Your truth unto the clouds” (Psa. 57:10; 108:4). “His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations” (Psa. 100:5). Our salvation relies equally upon both: “In mercy and truth atonement is provided for iniquity” (Prov. 16:6).

To emphasize mercy (without truth) may seem compassionate, but not according to God’s compassion! To emphasize truth (without mercy) may seem needful, but not according to God’s needs!
