Let's Go Back to the Bible

Does it fit or not fit?

When Jesus came to be baptized of John, He said, “it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15). The Greek word for “fitting” is prepo, which indicates that something is “becoming, suitable, proper, seemly.” Take that word and see it other times in the New Testament.

Regarding Jesus, it was “fitting” (becoming, suitable, proper, seemly) for Him to be made “the captain of their salvation…through sufferings” (Heb. 2:10), so that He could not only “save” us (Heb. 7:25) but to “fit” perfectly as our “High Priest” (7:26).

Now, regarding us, we need to ensure that the things we “speak” are “fitting for sound doctrine” (Tit. 2:1). If our words do not “fit” sound doctrine, they should not be spoken. Godly women are to wear that which “fits” them, specifically, “good works” (1 Tim. 2:9-10). Finally, Christians must avoid immoral behavior, for it is not “fitting for saints” (Eph. 5:3). When you look at your life as it compares to the will of God, does it fit? Do you, like Jesus, want to do that which “is fitting…to fulfill all righteousness”?
