Let's Go Back to the Bible

Blushing in shame? Not a chance!

The prophet Jeremiah was distraught at the moral and spiritual condition of the hearts of Israel in his day. Twice he spoke these words from God, revealing the impending judgment upon the people: “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed, nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; in the time of their punishment they shall be cast down” (8:12; 6:15).

Does that not precisely describe our own culture today? Abominations abound in our nation, and yet, is there any shame? No! Not at all! In fact, an ever-increasing number of people around us seemingly do not know how to blush anymore! Immorality of the worst kind is being championed and accepted, and there is not the slightest bit of shame or embarrassment.

As children of God, what can we do? What should we do? The very next verse in chapter 6 gives the answer, “Ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it” (6:16).
