Let's Go Back to the Bible

Are you saying the same thing?

In order to become a Christian, one must “confess” his faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:9-10). Of course, a Christian must continue to “confess” Christ (1 John 4:15). When a child of God sins, God calls upon him to “confess” his sins to our Father in heaven (1 John 1:9).

The Greek word for “confess” is homologeo, which is a compound word, combining lego (“to speak”) with the prefix homos (“same”). So the word literally means “to speak the same thing.”

When a person “confesses” his faith in Christ, he is publicly acknowledging his deep conviction of the Divine identity of Christ. Literally, he is “saying the same thing” that God says about Jesus. Again, when a Christian “confesses” his sins to the Father (or even to his brethren, Jas. 5:16), he is admitting having fallen short of God’s will. Literally, he is “saying the same thing” that God says about sin. Think about your need to “confess” as a Christian, and make sure that when you do, you are actually (and always) “saying the same thing” that God says.
