Let's Go Back to the Bible

Are you rich?

Since money has been thrust into a position of central importance in our society, it has become commonplace to judge someone’s value to us or our interest in them based upon their level of this world’s wealth. Consider God’s evaluation of true riches in 1 Timothy 6:17-19.

First of all, we must learn to not put our “trust in uncertain riches.” The riches of this world are uncertain! Secondly, notice that it is “the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” The riches of God are certain (from the “living God”)! They are abundant (“all things”)! They are unending (“gives” in present, continuous tense). Thirdly, realize that our emphasis must not be on monetary riches but rather to “be rich in good works.” This is the only way to “lay up treasure” (true, meaningful, valuable treasure in heaven) in order to “lay hold on eternal life.”

So, are you rich? Forget about your finances and your bank account balances! Are you richly blessed by God? Are you rich in good works? Those are the only riches that matter!
