Let's Go Back to the Bible

Are you deserving?

Jesus entered the city of Capernaum in Luke 7, and he was greeted by some “elders of the Jews,” who had been sent by a centurion to plead with Jesus to “come and heal his servant” (7:1-3). As they “begged” Jesus on behalf of this centurion, the elders exclaimed how “deserving” this man was (7:4). So Jesus made His way to the centurion’s house, but before He arrived, the centurion sent his friends to Jesus to say, “I am not worthy” (7:6-7).

So, which was it? Was this man deserving of Jesus’ attention or not? Was this man worthy of Jesus to come to him or not? Well, it depends on who you ask. If you ask the man, he said that he was not deserving or worthy. But others claimed that he was.

This is reminiscent of Proverbs 27:2, “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth.” Who are we to suggest that we are deserving/worthy of kindnesses from anyone else, let alone Jesus! If we are such, let others make such a claim about us and not we ourselves!
