Let's Go Back to the Bible

What Do You “Do Well” for the Lord?

In every part of life, there are some things at which you’re better and more skilled than other things.  Around the house and in the workplace, there are probably some things at which you’re better or more skilled than other things.  Even in your Christian life, there are probably some things at which you’re better or more skilled than other things.  With that being true, let’s examine a couple responsibilities that you have in that regard.

First of all, what you do well for God, do it to the very best of your ability! An Old Testament principle urges, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Ecc. 9:10).  Jesus taught, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).  As a Christian, there are some areas where you have great ability.  God says: Do all you can do to the very best level you can.  In fact, to the Thessalonian church, He urged to even greater heights.  “Concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you”; they were doing well in this area.  But then He continued, “We urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more” (1 Thess. 4:9-10).  Do all things well!

Second, what you do not do so well for God, give your attention to improving in that area! Sometimes our mindset is, “Well, I’m not so good in that particular area, but others are; so, I’ll let them take care of that aspect of Christianity.”  However, we must be mindful that, with very few exceptions, every activity of Christianity is to be engaged in by every Christian.  As one example, consider the characteristics of Christian growth detailed in 2 Peter 1:5-7.  There are, no doubt, some of these (faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love) with which you particularly struggle or fall short.  Does that mean you can ignore those and move on?  Verse 5 instructs us to give “all diligence” to develop these qualities.  Then, after giving ALL diligence, God instructs in verse 10, “Be even more diligent to make your call and election sure.”

Third, let us always remember that with God’s help, we can do more and grow more for the Lord than we ever think possible! What we do “for the Lord” is just that—FOR THE LORD!  It is not for others and not even for self—IT IS FOR HIM!  And, with His help, “all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26).

What do you “do well” for the Lord?  What can you do “more well” for the Lord?  Is it not worth giving Him your all in every aspect of your life?  What a joy!  What a blessing!  What a motivation!
