Let's Go Back to the Bible

The Eyes of the Lord

It is intriguing to read the Bible and read the accommodative language and terms that are used for God, in order that His care, activity and awareness of those things on this earth might be abundantly clear to us.  While “a spirit does not have flesh and bones” (Luke 24:39), such are ascribed to God in Scripture repeatedly to make Him more real and more personal to us.  For example, the Bible speaks of God’s hands (Psa. 95:5), feet (Nahum 1:3), arm (Isa. 40:10-11), finger (Ex. 31:18), ears (Psa. 18:6; 34:15), nostrils (Psa. 18:8, 15), mouth (Psa. 18:8; 33:6), bosom (Isa. 40:11), etc.

Consider for a moment what Scripture tells us about the eyes of the Lord.  As you think about this, remove the finite concept of creatures with two eyes.  (Around the throne of God are four living creatures, which John says, in Revelation 4:6-8, are “full of eyes in front and in back…full of eyes around and within.”)  At the same time, remove the finite limitations we have to space and time, as God is not limited by such (cf. Psa. 139:7-12).

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place” (Prov. 15:3).  There is nothing that the Lord does not see.  “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Heb. 4:13).

“The eyes of the Lord are…keeping watch on the evil” (Prov. 15:3).  Even the evil cannot hide themselves or their deeds from God (Psa. 139:11-12).  Thus, repeatedly in the history of Israel, one reads of kings who “did evil in the eyes of the Lord” (cf. 1 Kings 16:25).  Does it help you to know that God is keeping watch on your enemies and knows what they’re doing?

“The eyes of the Lord are…keeping watch on…the good” (Prov. 15:3).  No greater comfort can be afforded children of God than to hear, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous” (Psa. 34:15; 1 Pet. 3:12), and “He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous” (Job 36:7).  “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him” (2 Chron. 16:9).  There is no place you can go where God’s eyes are not lovingly watching over your every step (cf. Job 34:21).

Hagar gave the Lord a name that is very fitting,  “You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees” (Gen. 16:13).
