Let's Go Back to the Bible

Me and My Elders, You and Your Elders

Elders of the Lord’s church have such a tremendous responsibility—taking heed to themselves, taking heed to the spiritual welfare of the congregation, feeding the church, tending the church, guarding the church against error and deceivers, overseeing the work of the congregation, watching for the souls of the flock, living a life worthy of imitation, being ready to give an account, etc.

As members of the Lord’s church, what can we do for the shepherds?  What should we do?  What must we do?  It begins by shaping our attitude with a realization (not just of the qualifications and “authority” of the elders) of the enormous responsibility laid upon a shepherd in the Lord’s church.  Once we have shaped our hearts, here are some responsibilities the sheep have toward the shepherds.

Appreciate those who labor among you (1 Thess. 5:12).  Other translations have: know them, recognize them, acknowledge them, respect them.  Show your appreciation!

Esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake (1 Thess. 5:13).  Consider their labors and lovingly hold them in high regard for what they’re doing.  Let them know it!

Be at peace among yourselves (1 Thess. 5:13).  In the context of members respecting their elders, the injunction is made to live in peace with one another.  Be a peacemaker!

Obey them and be submissive to them (Heb. 13:17).  To those who are our leaders and watch for our souls, we must submit and follow them as they follow Christ.  This includes eating when they provide the feeding!

Count them worthy of double honor (1 Tim. 5:17-18).  All elders are worthy of honor; those who rule well are worthy of double honor.

Be slow, cautious and certain with criticism (1 Tim. 5:19-20).  Unless there is credible evidence of two or three witnesses, God says, “Don’t receive it.”

Emulate their faith (Heb. 13:7).  As we remember our leaders, we are told to follow or imitate their faith, considering the result of their conduct.

Pray for them (1 Tim. 2:1-2).  We are to pray for all men, for all in authority, which would include those responsible for the Lord’s sheep.

Let them lead us and watch us with joy and not with grief (Heb. 13:17).  Some might “let them lead” but make it difficult or grievous, but God says to let it be a joy for them.

God’s design for the organization of the church calls for shepherds (who are sheep themselves) and sheep to fulfill their responsibilities!  We can, we should and we must!
