Let's Go Back to the Bible

Make the Choice—the Bible or the Book of Mormon

One cannot believe both the Bible and the Book of Mormon are from God. They contradict each other. God cannot be the author of both for God cannot lie. To believe that God gave both books demands that one believes God does not always speak truth.

You must make the choice. For example, where was Jesus born? The Bible prophesied that He would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), and when the wise men came to Jerusalem the scribes sent them to Bethlehem. They left the walled city of Jerusalem and found Jesus in another city, but did not return to Jerusalem. Where do Mormons believe Jesus was born? “Behold, he shall be born of Mary at Jerusalem which is in the land of our forefathers” (Alma 7:10). God did not write both of these books. One of them is a fraud.

When was the church established? The Bible clearly teaches that when Jesus came, the church had not yet been established. In fact, Jesus promised that it would be built (Matt. 16:18). The church was established on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41, 47). When do Mormons believe the church  existed? According to the date given in the book of Mormon footnote, it was about 147 B.C. “And they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that day forward” (Mosiah 18:17).  God is not the author of both of these books. One of them is a fraud.

When were men first called Christians? God prophesied that He would reveal a new name for His people (Isaiah 62:2). The Bible shows that this was fulfilled, and God revealed the new name soon after the church began on Pentecost. What do Mormons teach about this? There were believers who belonged to the church of God in 73 B.C. “All those who were true believers took upon them gladly, the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called” (Alma 46:15). The Bible says, “And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11:26). Both books are not from God. One is a fraud, for God cannot lie (Titus 1:2).

How long did the darkness last at the crucifixion of Jesus? The Bible says, “Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour” (Luke 23:44). The Mormons teach that the sign of the death of Jesus was to be a period of darkness. “That darkness would cover the face of the whole earth for the space of three days” (Helaman 14:27). Three days is not three hours! Both of these accounts cannot be true. One is a fraud. Consider this. If a book is shown to be a fraud in several places, how can it be trusted in any place? Which is the fraud?
