Carefully consider this chain of verses. “God, who is rich in mercy” (Eph. 2:4), “and abundant in mercy” (Psa. 86:5), “according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope” (1 Pet. 1:3), “according to His mercy He saved us” (Tit. 3:5) and “made us alive together with Christ” (Eph. 2:5). By definition, mercy is not merely a feeling or an emotion, but it is an outward manifestation (an action) of pity or kindness toward one in need.
Now, follow this chain of verses to see that God turns and makes it personal. “Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36), for “what does the Lord require of you but…to love mercy” (Mic. 6:8), knowing that “the wisdom that is from above is…full of mercy” (Jas. 3:17). “Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy,” “for judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy” (Jas. 2:13).
Oh, how I need the mercy of God and the mercy of others! The mercy-filled God makes it known that the mercy I so desperately need is tied directly to me showing mercy!
