Oh, what we can learn when we take it one word at a time. Look at James 5:19-20.
“Brethren” – This is being addressed to Christians (very important to the context).
“if” – There is something that is a possibility…it cannot be called impossible.
“anyone” – This is not limited to certain Christians; it includes “any” Christian.
“among you” – This is talking about someone in the church, someone who is saved.
“wanders from” – This is the subjective verb; it is possible for any Christian to stray or err.
“the truth” – There is only one truth; there is no other truth to which one can wander.
Continuing to look at each word, you will find that the wandering brother is “a sinner,” who has “turned” from “the truth” to “the error” and is facing the consequences of “death.” The straying Christian’s only hope for “his soul” to be “saved” is to “turn back.” God’s Word is plain: we can fall away. Thank God for loving brethren who try to turn wandering Christians back!
