In First Samuel chapter 8, the Israelites demanded that Samuel “appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations” (8:5). In other words, “All of the other nations have a king. We want to be like all the other nations.” So, how did that work out for Israel? The nation would never be the same again. Sin ravaged her only three kings (Saul, David and Solomon). The nation was divided after only 120 years. 
The largest division (the northern ten tribes) gave themselves over to idolatry and turned against God. The smaller division (the southern two tribes) held out some hope, but the majority of her kings were evil. Eventually, God’s people were conquered.
Today, too Christians want “to be like everyone else.” How does that work out…each and every time? When a child of God wants to look like a child of the world, sin will always be the inevitable consequence, and God’s people will be conquered by it. Friend, do not be conformed to be like everyone else (Rom. 12:2). God has called us to stand out and be different (1 Thess. 4:3).
