The popular party game asks the question, “Would you rather?” For example, “Would you rather have smelly feet or stinky breath? Would you rather wake up in the morning as a bird or a dolphin?” And, you must choose one. You cannot say, “Neither.” So, let me ask you one: “Would you rather be rich or poor?” An interesting Bible text considers this choice.
Agur the son of Jakeh asked of God, “Give me neither poverty nor riches—Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, And say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God” (Prov. 30:7-9).
What an intriguing perspective! One can become rich and think he does not really need the Lord or His church or His lifestyle. Could that happen to you? But, also, in one’s impoverished condition, one may make choices that cause him to blame God for his plight. In this “Would you rather?” the only answer is, “Neither!” May our financial condition never affect our spiritual condition!
