Let's Go Back to the Bible

Work!

Dear friends, the Bible teaches us that we are to “work.” Regardless of how your parents raised you, regardless of how our society has conditioned you, regardless of how you personally feel about the matter, God commands us to “work.”

A Christian is to “labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have…” (Eph. 4:28). “Labor” is a present tense imperative. We must “work” in order to “have.” (What should we “have” if we do not “work”?) Christians are commanded: “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat” (2 Thess. 3:10). “Let him not eat” is a present tense imperative. (What should we have to “eat” if we do not “work”?) Those who are not willing to work are described as walking “in a disorderly manner” (3:11, NKJV) or “leading an undisciplined life” (NASB). The inspired apostle said, “We command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work” (3:12).

Friend, Christians must not be lazy! Regardless of what others do, we must have a strong work ethic (cf. Ecc. 9:10) accompanied by a positive, Christ-like attitude (Col. 3:22-25)!
