The word “impudent” means “marked by contemptuous or cocky boldness or disregard of others; rude and not showing respect, especially toward someone who is in a more important position.” Is there a more apt word to describe the behavior of those surrounding Jesus’ cross?
Look at the impudence in Luke 23:35-39. The rulers “sneered, saying, ‘He saved others; let Him SAVE HIMSELF.’” The “soldiers also mocked Him…saying, ‘If You are the King of the Jews, SAVE YOURSELF.’” “One of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, ‘If You are the Christ, SAVE YOURSELF and us.’”
Look at their words. They contemptuously heckled Jesus to SAVE HIMSELF, when what Jesus was doing on the cross was trying to SAVE THEM! They (and we) were the ones who needed SAVING! Thank God that Jesus “endured the cross” (Heb. 12:2) and the impudent jeering (1 Pet. 2:23), in order that He might SAVE ME!
