Let's Go Back to the Bible

“The rest of the Scriptures”

As Peter wrote about how ignorant individuals were taking Paul’s “epistles” and twisting them “to their own destruction,” he concluded his sentence by saying, “…as they do also the rest of the Scriptures” (2 Pet. 3:15-16). That is interesting for a number of reasons. First, Peter recognized the existence and collection of “the Scriptures,” which he had earlier affirmed were from the Holy Spirit and not from man (1:20-21). Second, he identified Paul’s epistles as Scripture, placing them on the same level as the writings of Moses, Isaiah, etc. Thus, we have a clear declaration of both Old Testament and New Testament writings being considered “Scripture” (see also 1 Timothy 5:18 for a quotation of both as “Scripture”), and we know that “all Scripture was given by the inspiration of God” (2 Tim. 3:16).

What does this have to do with us today? Pick up your Bible! Have confidence! Know that you are not just reading a man’s opinion! From beginning to end, that which is “written” (the basic meaning of the Greek word for “Scripture”) is from your Creator in heaven! What a thought!
