Let's Go Back to the Bible

Submission is such a negative concept—or is it?

Submission is not a pleasing concept in our society today, as it carries some sense of inferiority or weakness.  But, such is not the case in Scripture.  Submission is a command of God.

Children are to be in submission to their parents (1 Tim. 3:4).  Wives are to be in submission to their husbands (Eph. 5:22; Col. 3:18; 1 Pet. 3:1, 5).  Women are to be in submission in the assembly of the saints (1 Cor. 14:34; 1 Tim. 2:11).  Servants are to be in submission to their masters (1 Pet. 2:18).  Citizens are to be in submission to the governing authorities (1 Pet. 2:13).  Church members are to be in submission to their shepherds/overseers (Heb. 13:17).  Younger people are to be in submission to those who are older (1 Pet. 5:5).  Christians are to be in submission to fellow Christians (Eph. 5:21; 1 Pet. 5:5).

Someone might say, “Well, I don’t like that.  That doesn’t seem right.”  We are told to “submit to God” (James 4:7).  Submitting to God means submitting in all areas of His instruction.
