Do you remember when you (or your child) needed training wheels on the bike to learn how to ride and to keep from falling over? How long did you use them? Did you take one wheel off, but leave one for safety and balance? At what point did you finally remove both training wheels and go without them? What if you were still using training wheels on your bike today?
In a spiritual sense, Christians also have “training wheels.” When someone first becomes a Christian, there are those beginner’s principles that they must learn and upon which they must rely as they get used to “riding” as a Christian. But, at some point, the Christian needs to grow and not always focus only on the beginner’s principles.
The book of Hebrews says it like this, “Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection…” (6:1). Growth as a Christian is absolutely necessary, otherwise we will look like an adult riding a bike with training wheels.
