Jesus was eating in the house of a Pharisee named Simon, when a “woman of the city” came and expressed her deep love for Jesus. How did she do that? Notice Jesus’ words to Simon:
“Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much” (Luke 7:44-47).
Can you imagine a more lowly, more humiliating, more demeaning act than to shed your tears on someone’s unwashed feet, to wipe those muddy feet with your own hair, and then to pour fragrant (and costly) perfume over those feet? Why would anyone stoop to such a level of vulnerability and servitude? Jesus said it! “She loved much!” I wonder…how much do we love Jesus? How do we show it? What are willing to do?
