The closeness of the relationship between King David and the Lord is one that fascinates and ought to motivate us. When David spoke to the Lord in the Psalms, he addressed his God with such familiarity, intimacy and confidence. Meditate on his words in Psalm 86.
David called upon his Lord to “bow down Your ear…hear me” (v. 1), “preserve my life” (v. 2), “save your servant” (v. 2), “be merciful to me” (v. 3), “make glad the soul of Your servant” (v. 4), “give ear…to my prayer” (v. 6), “teach me Your way” (v. 11), “unite my heart to fear Your name” (v. 11), “turn to me and have mercy on me” (v. 16), “give Your strength to Your servant” (v. 16).
David could speak with such openness and confidence because he knew the Lord was “good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy” (v. 5), “great and [does] wondrous things” (v. 10), “great” in “mercy” (v. 13), “full of compassion, gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth” (v. 15). What a tremendous relationship! What will it take for you and me to be able to approach our Lord with such love, devotion, closeness and certainty?
