Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Said a wordy dird”

You can’t go anywhere (it seems) without hearing some sort of profanity. It’s in our schools, workplaces and recreational centers, and is as accepted (and expected) as running water and air conditioning. Too often, sadly, children of God allow it to seep into our own vocabulary.

In his article on “The Plague of Profanity” (on ChristianCourier.com), Wayne Jackson drew this convincing conclusion: “Profanity is such an invasive influence; it’s a mind-maggot. It gnaws its way into the recesses of one’s thinking, and, if harbored, will make its presence spontaneously felt at the slightest provocation. This is what happens when we allow ourselves to be unnecessarily and regularly exposed to its vileness. We may soon begin to ‘cuss’ mentally even if we don’t verbalize profanity outright.”

Brethren, let us “put off…filthy language out of” our mouths (Col. 3:8; cf. Eph. 4:29). Let us measure every word by (1) its imitation of Jesus (1 Cor. 11:1); (2) its acceptability in the sight of God (Psa. 19:14); and (3) how it will judge us in the end (Matt. 12:36-37).
