Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Me, myself and I — need I say more?”

Years ago there was a teacher who offered extra credit in his class for doing various projects (what some might consider unusual projects). One of his favorites was to give his students extra credit for carrying in their pocket a little spiral (memo size) notebook. They only had to carry it for one day and he told them there was only one thing they had to do with it – every time they said the words “I,” “my,” “me”

or “mine,” they were to put a mark in the notebook. The students who took on this challenge (and followed the instructions) were always amazed at how many times they said those little words. And, from the teacher’s view, that was the whole point!

It is obviously not wrong to use those words, but the teacher wanted his students to measure how much they gave attention to themselves. Jesus used those words, though it was usually about His mission or His Father. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes humility (Matt. 5:3), selflessness (Phil. 2:3-4) and un-conceited behavior (Rom. 12:3). I know I can do better.
