Let's Go Back to the Bible

Popularity? In whose eyes?

“I want people to like me. I want people to say nice things about me. I want to be accepted and popular. I don’t want people to say disparaging things about me.”

This thought process is common to all of us. But we should be careful. Jesus said, “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets” (Luke 6:26). He said this just six sentences after He said, “Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake” (6:22).

Why would Jesus say, “Woe to you when men speak well of you” AND “Blessed are you when men hate you”? Because living the Christian life evokes a certain response (often very negative) toward a faithful child of God. When a Christian is treated hatefully, Jesus takes note and will bless you. But He also warns, “If you are Mr. Popular and all people laud you, you’d better take note. Are you living the distinctively Christ-honoring life to which He called you?”
