God demonstrated His love for the whole world by sending His Son (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 John 4:9). There is no doubt that He longs for all men to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9; John 3:17; Titus 2:11). However, I determine His attitude toward me now by my own attitude.
The faithful in Hebrews 11 lived, as “strangers and pilgrims,” seeking “a homeland,” desiring “a better, that is, a heavenly country.” With that kind of attitude toward God and godly living, “God is not ashamed to be called their God” (Heb. 11:13-16). However, the opposite is also true. Jesus said, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory” (Luke 9:26; cf. Heb. 2:11).
Is there a thought more distressing than that of God being ashamed of us now or more dreadful than that of Jesus being ashamed of us when He comes back? May we, therefore, make this our constant attitude – “I’m not ashamed to own my Lord!”
