There is a scene in the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” movie (although I liked the older “Willy Wonka” version better) when Charlie received a chocolate bar for his birthday. While disappointed that he did not find a Golden Ticket inside, Charlie began to share his chocolate bar with each member of his family. His grandfather and mother tried to refuse him, saying it was his birthday present, but Charlie said, “It’s my candy bar and I’ll do what I want with it.”
What sort of “candy bars” (i.e., gifts) have you received from God? The apostle Paul provides insight into that question by asking his own question, “What do you have that you did not receive?” (1 Cor. 4:7). Every blessing that we possess and enjoy has been given to us by God. Some, who are materialistic, might selfishly cry, “It’s my candy bar and I’ll do what I want with it.” Others, who are spiritually-minded and “others-focused,” might give liberally unto loved ones, and, when their kindness is refused, may selflessly reply, “It’s my candy bar and I’ll what I want with it.” Where would your heart be if you found yourself voicing those words?
