Someone was showing me their Bible the other day and it was literally falling apart – pages were brittle, torn and falling out; the binding and leather cover were coming apart. It was being held together, in a manner of speaking, by layers of tape and glue. Now, it did not get this way just because it was old, nor was it roughly mishandled. There was one reason and one reason only that this person’s Bible was falling apart – it had been used and used and used.
In a way, this Bible was tattling on its owner. The Bible itself had a story to tell and it was preaching loud and clear. Its owner had opened it thousands and thousands of times; turned page after page after page, leaving soiled marks on them over the years; underlined verses and written notes in the margins; carried it on business trips, family vacations and church retreats time and time again. In a way, the condition of the Bible represented the condition of its owner’s soul. What does the condition of your Bible tell you about your soul?
