Let's Go Back to the Bible

Help a brother out!

By both His words and His actions, Jesus emphasized the need to help out a brother who is in need. Jesus noted that since anyone would help their donkey or ox out of a pit that he should be willing to do what he can when he can to help out a brother even more (Luke 14:1-5).

Of course, Jesus did not limit that help to meeting physical needs. Most importantly, we are to help a brother with his spiritual needs. When we find a brother who has allowed something to obstruct his view from rightly serving the Lord (even something as small as a “speck” in the eye), we are to “first” consider ourselves and our own shortcomings and work to correct those (Matt. 7:5; Jas. 1:23-24; Gal. 6:1), and “then” we are to go to our brother and seek to assist him (using the “measure” of God’s righteous judgment, Matt. 7:2; John 7:24) “to remove the speck” from his eye.

Jesus said, “If your eye is bad, your whole body is full of darkness” (6:23). We need to help each other out, to make sure that we are all seeing and going in the right direction (cf. Jas. 5:19-20).
