It is estimated (by some) that one in seven Americans suffers from depression. Depression has been called “the common cold of mental illnesses.” While I don’t want to over-emphasize or minimize the condition, here are some thoughts from Scripture.
The word “depression” appears only once in the Bible (and that in the NKJV) — “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression” (Prov. 12:25). God says that depression is caused by anxiety. But God tells us to “be anxious for nothing” (Phil. 4:6). How can He possibly expect us to do that? “In everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Phil. 4:6). By “giving everything to God,” depression can be replaced by “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Phil. 4:7).
I know that all of this is easier in theory than in practice. However, if you suffer from anxiety and depression, how often and thoroughly are you truly giving it all to God? Don’t forget that He is the Great Physician! He is the Wonderful Counselor! He is the Prince of Peace!
