Let's Go Back to the Bible

Got your heart set on putting your child to death?

Now, that is a scary question!  Who, in their right mind, would ever think of setting their heart on the death of their child?  Such a possibility is ludicrous and even discussing the idea seems border-line insanity.  However, the Bible indicates that plenty of parents operate in this realm.

The end of Proverbs 19:18 urges, “Do not set your heart on his destruction” (NKJV); “Do not desire his death” (NASB); “Do not set your heart on putting him to death” (ESV); “Do not be a willing party to their death” (NIV).  Again, what parent would ever think of this?  Why does God even take space in the Bible to give such a command?  The answer lies in the first part of Proverbs 19:18.  If parents fail to obey the first part, they are essentially doing the second part.

“Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction.”  If I, as a parent, fail to properly discipline my child, I have made up my mind to be a willing party to his/her death!  Discipline or death?  Which one suits your parenting style?
