Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Against You”

Perhaps we sometimes lose sight of the seriousness of sin. It seems ok, sometimes, and doesn’t feel like that big of a deal. Notice the common theme that runs through the Bible.

Joseph: “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin AGAINST GOD?” (Gen. 39:9). David: “AGAINST YOU, You only, have I sinned” (Psa. 51:4). Solomon: “When Your people are defeated…because they have sinned AGAINST YOU” (1 Kgs. 8:33, 35, 46, 50). Jeremiah: “We have sinned AGAINST YOU” (Jer. 14:7, 20). Daniel: “We have sinned AGAINST YOU” (Dan. 9:7-8). Nehemiah: “We have sinned AGAINST YOU…have acted very corruptly AGAINST YOU…rebelled AGAINST YOU” (Neh. 1:6, 7; 9:26, 29).

Sin can hurt us and it can hurt others, but it ought to trouble us deeply to think that every time we sin, it is “AGAINST GOD.” Jesus hid God’s Word in His heart, that He might “do those things that PLEASE” GOD (John 8:29) and “not sin AGAINST” GOD (Psa. 119:11; Matt. 4:1-11). Are we doing that?
