Let's Go Back to the Bible

Why Modest Apparel Matters—Or Does It?

We were able to take our girls to Disney World in Orlando for the first time in about three years.  A lot of things had changed—new rides, renovated attractions, increase in parking cost, etc.  However, there were numerous things, obviously, that had not changed.  One of the most observable trends, that has remained constant on every visit, is the prevalence of female bodies bearing more skin and highlighting more body parts than they should.  I am fully aware that this is not a popular topic and that many Christians would prefer to simply avoid the matter all together, but as the Bible addresses this issue in clear terms, we must be faithful to the precepts of our God.

As it was the apparel choices of the women at Disney that disturbed me the most, this article, in specifics, is intended to address the modesty of today’s ladies.  However, the Biblical principles have equal application to men, as well.  So, here’s the question:  Why does it matter what a woman wears?  Or does it?

It matters because God specifically addressed the attire of women in the New Testament. “In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel…which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works” (1 Tim. 2:9-10).  With emphasis on “chaste conduct accompanied by fear,” the Lord instructs women, “Do not let your adornment be merely outward…rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God” (1 Pet. 3:2-4).

It matters because of the immense influence it has on others. Ladies, men are looking at you.  Is your choice of attire influencing them to look at you to lust after you (Matt. 5:28)?  If so, you are setting a stumbling block before them (Rom. 14:13, 21).  Ladies, other ladies watching you (including mothers, daughters, friends, sisters in Christ, etc.).  Is your choice of attire influencing them to dress in the same fashion, without any restriction or awareness of their own influence (1 Tim. 4:12, “in purity”)?  If so, you are also setting a stumbling block before them (Rom. 14:13, 21).

It matters because it not only causes others to jeopardize their souls, but it jeopardizes your own soul. Disregarding the commands of God in regard to “modest apparel” is a sin.  Closing your eyes to the warnings of God in regard to your influence is a sin.  Ladies, I know this may not seem like a big deal to you.  I know you may want to blame men.  I know that our society lives by different standards.  However, the Christian life is one of holiness in all things.  Think about it.
