Let's Go Back to the Bible

Where Does the Power Come From?

It is a common experience.  You buy a new lamp, plug it in and turn it on.  You buy a TV, plug it in and turn it on.  You buy a DVD player, a cable box, and oh no!  You only have two power sockets and you need more.  So, now you buy a power strip, plug it in and you have plenty of sockets.

Oh no!  Another problem.  You’ve plugged in too much to that one wall socket.  Now you move to another wall socket, plug in another power strip and transfer some electronics.  You go to the circuit breaker box and flip the breaker back on.

When you get a new oven, it needs a special plug.  You get the special socket installed, plug it in and turn it on.  You get a hot water heater and it needs to be hard-wired directly into the main electrical system.  You get it hooked up and turn it on.  You’ve got the power! But, where did it come from?

You may be like me and not know much about the whole process.  You know that when you plug an electronic into the wall socket that it is connected to the circuit breaker box.  The main power line comes to the house from the pole, which has been run from the local power substation.  I don’t know how all of that works (not a clue), and I don’t need to know.  All I know is that I plug it in and there’s power!

Take this and make a spiritual application.  The Almighty God in heaven is all-powerful (Jer. 32:17).  He made all things and He sustains all things (Psa. 33:6, 9).  God has the power to forgive me of all sins (Matt. 9:6).  God has the power to help me through all my trials and troubles (2 Chron. 25:8).  God has the power to hear all of the prayers and pleadings that I make and knows all things happening in my life (Matt. 6:8).  God has all the power!

When I pray, I plug into that power.  But, unlike those wall sockets in our homes, there is no limit and no maximum that can be reached.  If you want to make more than one connection with your Power Source, go for it.  If you want to daisy chain dozens of prayer lines together, go for it.  One connection with the Almighty God is more powerful than anything we can imagine, for He “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Eph. 3:20).  There’s nothing you can plug into that Power that will trip the circuit breaker!

When it comes to the power of prayer and the powerful way in which God answers prayers, I don’t know how it all works (not a clue), and I don’t need to know.  All I know is that I connect to God through prayer and there’s power!
