Let's Go Back to the Bible

Jesus Memorized It—So Should You (Verse 3)

Three times in Matthew 4 Jesus was tempted by Satan, and three times in Matthew 4 Jesus resisted Satan’s pursuits by quoting Scripture—“It is written!” If we have any hope today of successfully thwarting the deceptions of the evil one, we must follow the example of our Savior and commit the Word of God to our minds and our hearts (Psa. 119:11).

One passage that Jesus committed to His heart was this one that He quoted from Deuteronomy 6:13—“You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve” (Matt. 4:10).  Is this verse written on your heart?

Satan offered Jesus the very most that could be offered (and, in reality, offered to Him more than Satan could actually deliver—but that’s the nature of deception).  Jesus only had to do one thing—just one thing:  “fall down and worship me” (4:9).  For one “small act” Jesus could have “all the kingdoms of the world and their glory…all these things.”  Oh, how tempting that must have been—for just “one moment of indiscretion” to acquire and enjoy so much.  But, with resounding determination and Scriptural firmness, Jesus overcame!

There will be times in a Christian’s life when he will be tempted (his desires enticed) to put something ahead of God, as a top priority of utmost importance.  The appeal to do this may even be strengthened if it is perceived to be only a momentary act (lasting only for a limited time) to gain a certain benefit, then return God to first place afterwards and immediately.  Brethren, this will not work.  Here’s what we know from Jesus’ choice passage:

God must be first and always first in our lives! God will never ever (even for a moment) settle for second place.  The passage in Deuteronomy commands to “fear the Lord,” which requires that He alone be the object of our respect, reverence, awe and highest priority.

God must be worshiped and God alone! Worship (Greek proskuneo, to prostrate oneself in homage) is not optional or multiple choice.  God alone must be worshiped (John 4:24), for He alone is worthy!

God must be served and God alone! Serving (Greek latreuo, to work for hire) is not optional.  God alone must be served (Matt. 6:24), for He alone is worthy!

May God help us to use His word to overcome Satan’s ever tactic and keep God foremost in all of our lives!
